Tale Of Two Loco’s or was it one?
Recently we have acquired a Saddle Tank 850 Class Numbered 1991 from the Kennerley collection in Australia. This is an exquisite model with fine detail and typical of Kennerley’s excellent modelling. Later we acquired a Pannier Tank from a location in Dorset, again a fine model but look at the loco number!!
What has happened here?? Its 1991!!! How can this be??
The origins of this class date back to the 27xx class of 1901. The GWR invested heavily in six-wheeled shunting engines which all took place in Churchwoods era. These were originally fitted with saddle tanks. Then because saddle tanks would not fit easily over the new boilers coming into use at the turn of the century, they were then fitted with pannier tanks attached to the sides of the boiler.
As you can see on our models originally these locomotives were open cab, in later years these cabs were modified to improve working conditions.
The conversions to Pannier Tanks started before 1914 most of the Saddle Tanks were converted to Pannier Tanks in Collett’s time
It must have made life interesting for trainspotters, and makes life equally interesting for research essential for the discerning modeller and explains why two models can have to same number.
We would be very interested to hear from other modellers on this unusual occurence.
